Overview

What is Observ skin analysis?

Most of what determines how your skin will look in ten years is already there, sitting below the surface where you cannot see it. Sun damage in particular builds up silently for years before it appears as visible pigmentation. Observ is a way of looking at that hidden layer before deciding what to treat.

The system photographs your face under a series of different light modes, each of which reveals something the others cannot. Daylight gives a true baseline. Cross-polarised light cuts through surface shine to show the deeper layers, while parallel-polarised light does the opposite and emphasises surface texture and fine lines. Dedicated pigmentation and vascular modes separate uneven tone from underlying redness. True UV reveals sub-surface pigmentation and bacterial activity that are invisible in ordinary light, and a simulated Wood's light shows how oil and dryness are distributed across the face.

The scan itself is entirely non-invasive and takes seconds. Nothing touches your skin and there is no discomfort. What matters is the conversation afterwards, when your practitioner walks you through the images and explains what each one shows.

Those images do two jobs. They make the reasoning behind a treatment plan visible, so you can see why a particular approach is being recommended rather than simply being told. And because they are stored, they become the baseline you measure progress against later, which is far more reliable than memory when changes happen gradually.

Benefits

Why patients choose Observ

  • Reveals sun damage and pigmentation long before it becomes visible
  • Separates surface texture, pigment and underlying redness
  • Shows how oil and dryness are distributed across the face
  • Makes the reasoning behind your treatment plan visible
  • Creates a stored baseline to measure progress against
  • Completely non-invasive, with no contact and no downtime
Is it right for me?

Observ suits anyone who wants their treatment plan built on evidence rather than assumption. It is particularly useful if you are unsure which concern to prioritise, if you want to understand what sun exposure has already done, or if you are starting a course of treatment or a new skincare regime and want a clear before to compare against later. It is a diagnostic assessment rather than a treatment in itself.

What to expect

What to expect from Observ

  1. Step 1

    Preparation

You will be asked to arrive with a clean face, or make-up will be removed at the clinic, since anything on the skin will obscure what the imaging is designed to show.

  2. Step 2

    Imaging

You rest your chin on the unit and a series of images is captured under different light modes in a matter of seconds. Nothing touches your skin and there is no heat, no light flashes bright enough to be uncomfortable, and nothing to feel.

  3. Step 3

    Interpretation and planning

Your practitioner takes you through each image and explains what it shows, from sun damage and pigmentation to vascular concerns, texture and oil distribution. Together you agree which concerns matter most to you and build a plan around them.

Aftercare

There is nothing to recover from. You can apply make-up and return to your normal routine immediately. Your images are stored so that they can be compared against a repeat scan later, and most people find it useful to repeat the assessment after a course of treatment or a few months into a new skincare regime, when progress is easier to see side by side than from memory. If anything on the scan warrants closer medical attention, such as a suspicious pigmented lesion, your practitioner will discuss the appropriate next step with you rather than leaving it to a future appointment.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Observ

What is Observ and what does it show?

Observ is a skin imaging system that photographs your face under a series of different light modes. Each mode reveals something different: surface texture and fine lines, uneven pigmentation, underlying redness and vascular concerns, sub-surface sun damage visible only under UV, and how oil and dryness are distributed across the face.

Is it a treatment or an assessment?

It is an assessment. Observ does not change your skin; it shows what is there so that treatment decisions can be made on evidence rather than assumption. It is usually the starting point for a plan rather than a standalone appointment.

Does it hurt, and is it safe?

Neither. Nothing touches your skin and the system simply photographs it under different types of illumination. There is no heat, no discomfort and no recovery.

How long does it take?

The imaging itself takes only seconds. Allow around half an hour for the appointment as a whole, since the value is in going through the images with your practitioner and discussing what they mean for you.

Why does it show damage I cannot see in the mirror?

Ultraviolet light penetrates deeper than visible light and reveals pigment sitting below the surface, often years before it appears to the naked eye. This is why the UV image frequently shows far more sun damage than people expect, and it is one of the most useful things the assessment does.

Do I need to prepare beforehand?

Please come with a clean face, or arrive a little early so make-up can be removed at the clinic. Foundation, concealer and sunscreen all sit on the surface and will obscure exactly what the imaging is meant to reveal.

Can I have it again to track progress?

Yes, and that is one of its main uses. Your images are stored, so a repeat scan after a course of treatment or several months into a new regime can be compared directly against your baseline. Gradual change is very hard to judge from memory and much easier to see side by side.

How much does Observ skin analysis cost?

Pricing depends on the consultation and what is agreed for you and is confirmed in writing at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.
