Overview
A safe, reliable and permanent surgical correction for prominent ears
Prominent ear correction surgery, also known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty, permanently repositions ears that protrude more than desired. The operation is safe, reliable and suitable for both adults and children, providing a lasting improvement to the shape and position of the ears.
The procedure is carried out through small incisions in the natural crease at the back of the ear. The underlying cartilage is reshaped using precisely placed internal stitches, and in some cases a small amount of cartilage is removed. It is this cartilage adjustment that repositions the ears, rather than skin tightening.
The operation takes approximately two hours in our procedure room and can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, both as a day case. Stitches behind the ear are removed at around one week, and a bandage or headband is worn for the first week, followed by a further six weeks of wearing a headband at night to protect the result while healing is complete.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Is prominent ear correction permanent?
Yes. The cartilage is reshaped and held with internal stitches, providing a permanent correction. The ears will not return to their original position once fully healed.
Will the scars be visible?
The incisions are made in the natural crease at the back of the ear, where they are well hidden. Once healed, the scars are discreet and not visible from the front.
What is the difference between pinnaplasty and otoplasty?
Pinnaplasty and otoplasty are different names for the same type of ear correction surgery. Both terms refer to procedures that reposition or reshape the outer ear.
Why do I need to wear a headband after the operation?
The headband protects the reshaped cartilage while it heals and prevents the ears from being inadvertently bent out of position, particularly during sleep. It is worn day and night for the first week, then at night only for six weeks.
Is the surgery suitable for children?
Yes. Prominent ear correction is suitable for children as well as adults. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate anaesthetic option and timing at the consultation.
How much does ear correction surgery cost?
Pricing depends on the treatment and what is agreed for you and is confirmed in writing at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.
