Overview

Reduce size, relieve discomfort and achieve better proportion

A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, combines volume reduction with a breast lift to address both the functional and aesthetic effects of large, heavy breasts. As well as achieving better shape and proportion, the procedure relieves the chronic neck, back and shoulder pain that many patients live with for years before seeking surgery.

Our surgical team offers a range of techniques, including the vertical scar (minimal scar) approach that results in less scarring than traditional methods and is particularly suited to many patients and those at higher risk of problematic scarring. The technique used is chosen after discussion at consultation to suit your individual anatomy and goals.

Surgeons at Maison Restorative have extensive NHS experience in breast surgery and reconstruction, including complex symmetrisation procedures. A thorough consultation ensures the approach chosen is right for you.

What to expect

Your treatment journey

  1. 1

    Consultation

Your surgeon discusses your symptoms and goals, examines the breast and recommends the most suitable technique, explaining likely scarring patterns and outcomes.

  2. 2

    Surgery

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is lifted and reshaped, and the nipple is repositioned to achieve natural proportions.

  3. 3

    Recovery and follow-up

Detailed aftercare instructions are provided. Follow-up appointments monitor healing, and we are available at any point to address questions during your recovery.

Aftercare

A supportive surgical bra is worn during the initial recovery period. Keep wound sites clean and dry, and avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting until your surgeon advises it is safe to do so. Swelling and bruising are normal and improve steadily over several weeks. We will see you at follow-up appointments to check healing and scarring, and to review your overall result.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does the procedure involve?

Your surgeon removes excess breast tissue and skin, repositions the nipple and reshapes the remaining breast tissue to create a natural, lifted contour. The specific technique is chosen at consultation based on your anatomy and the degree of reduction needed.

What scarring should I expect?

All breast reduction techniques leave some scarring. The most common pattern involves scars around the areola and vertically down toward the breast crease; some patients benefit from the vertical scar technique, which reduces the total scar length. Scars fade considerably over time.

Will the results be permanent?

A breast reduction produces a lasting change to volume and shape. Weight changes and pregnancy can affect the result over time, which is worth bearing in mind if you are planning a future pregnancy.

Will sensation be affected?

Some temporary change in nipple sensation is common after surgery. In most cases sensation returns over several months, though individual outcomes vary and are discussed at your consultation.

Can asymmetry be corrected at the same time?

Yes. Addressing asymmetry is a routine part of the procedure and your surgeon will plan the operation to achieve the most balanced, symmetrical result possible.

How much does breast reduction surgery cost?

Pricing depends on the surgical plan agreed for you and is confirmed in writing at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.
