Overview

What is IPL photo rejuvenation?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photo rejuvenation uses carefully controlled pulses of light to target pigment and redness in the skin, without disrupting the surface. Light energy is absorbed by melanin in sun spots and freckles, and by haemoglobin in broken capillaries, gently breaking them down to reveal a more even, luminous complexion.

The heat generated by the treatment also triggers the skin's natural healing response, stimulating fresh collagen and elastin production. Over a course of sessions the skin not only looks more even in tone but also firmer and smoother in texture.

At Maison Restorative, every patient receives a thorough skin assessment before treatment begins, and our practitioners tailor the settings to your skin type and concern. IPL can be used on the face, hands, décolletage or other isolated body areas.

What to expect

What to expect from IPL Photo Rejuvenation

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and skin assessment

One of our practitioners assesses your skin, discusses your concerns and confirms that IPL is the right choice for you before planning your treatment course.

  2. Step 2

    Treatment

A cooling gel is applied and the IPL handpiece is passed over the treated area, delivering controlled pulses of light. Sessions typically take under an hour.

  3. Step 3

    Aftercare

Skin may look slightly flushed or show darkened spots for a few days as the pigment rises and sheds. Simple sun-protection advice is provided after each session.

Aftercare

Expect mild redness and a warm, slightly sunburnt sensation for a few hours, sometimes with light swelling around treated spots on the first day. Use a cool compress if it feels hot and keep your skincare simple. Pigmented patches will usually darken over the following days and take on a speckled, coffee-ground appearance before flaking away within a week to ten days: this is the treatment working, so let them shed on their own and do not scrub, exfoliate or pick. Leave make-up off for the rest of the day, and avoid retinoids, vitamin C, acids and exfoliants for around a week. Keep away from saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, swimming pools and vigorous exercise for 48 hours. Sun protection determines your result: use a high-factor broad-spectrum SPF daily and avoid direct sun, sunbeds and self-tan for at least four weeks before and after each session, since treating tanned skin risks burns and fresh sun exposure will simply undo the pigmentation you have just cleared. Contact the clinic if blistering, crusting or unusual pain develops.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about IPL Photo Rejuvenation

What skin concerns can IPL treat?

IPL is effective for sun spots, age spots, freckles, diffuse redness, broken capillaries, uneven skin tone and general photo-ageing. The treatment can also improve overall skin texture through collagen stimulation.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients achieve the best results with a course of three sessions spaced two weeks apart. Your practitioner will advise the right number for your skin during consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe a mild snapping or warming sensation during treatment. Cooling gel is applied to keep the skin comfortable throughout.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal. Some patients notice temporary redness and darkening of treated spots for a few days, but most return to normal activities straight away.

Am I suitable for IPL?

IPL suits a wide range of skin types, though it is not suitable for very dark skin tones or recently tanned skin. A full skin assessment at consultation will confirm your suitability and the right settings for you.

How much does IPL photo rejuvenation cost?

Pricing depends on the areas treated and the course agreed for you and is confirmed in writing at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.
