Overview
Removal of spider veins and thread veins
Sclerotherapy is a well-established medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins and small varicose veins, most commonly on the legs. A sclerosant solution is injected directly into the affected vessel, irritating the vessel wall so it collapses, sticks together and is gradually reabsorbed by the body. Over time the vein fades from view entirely.
Spider veins and varicose veins are very common, affecting up to 50% of adults at some point in their lives, and they become more prevalent with age. While they are not usually a health concern, they can cause self-consciousness or discomfort. Sclerotherapy has been in clinical use since the 1930s and remains the gold-standard treatment for small calibre veins.
Results develop progressively over several weeks as the treated vessels are reabsorbed. Multiple veins can often be treated in a single session, and most patients require a course of two to three sessions for optimal clearance.

Is it right for me?
Sclerotherapy suits adults with spider veins or small varicose veins on the legs who want a safe, effective, non-surgical solution. A consultation confirms suitability and rules out any underlying venous condition.
What to expect
Your treatment journey
- 1
Consultation
Your veins are assessed to confirm they are suitable for sclerotherapy. Your practitioner explains the procedure and discusses the number of sessions likely to achieve your desired result.
- 2
Treatment
A fine needle is used to inject sclerosant solution into each target vessel. The session takes around thirty to forty-five minutes. Multiple veins can be treated at each visit.
- 3
Aftercare
Compression stockings are recommended after treatment to support the vessels. Mild bruising and temporary discolouration are normal and settle over a few weeks as the vessels are reabsorbed.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
How does sclerotherapy work?
A sclerosant solution is injected directly into the vein. This irritates the vessel lining, causing it to swell, close off and gradually be reabsorbed by the body. The vein slowly fades from view over the weeks following treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients need two to three sessions to achieve full clearance, though this depends on the number and extent of the veins. Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.
Is it painful?
Sclerotherapy involves a series of small injections. Most patients find it tolerable with only mild stinging or pressure at each injection site. No anaesthetic is required.
Is there any downtime?
Downtime is minimal. We recommend wearing compression stockings for a period after treatment and avoiding strenuous exercise and prolonged heat (such as hot baths or saunas) for a few days. Mild bruising or skin discolouration is normal and fades over a few weeks.
Are spider veins the same as varicose veins?
Spider veins (also called thread veins) are the small, superficial red or blue vessels close to the skin surface. Varicose veins are larger, raised and may require assessment for an underlying cause before treatment. Sclerotherapy is suitable for spider veins and smaller varicose veins; larger varicose veins may need specialist vascular review first.
How much does sclerotherapy cost?
Pricing depends on the number of sessions and what is agreed for you and is confirmed in writing at your consultation, with no obligation to proceed.
